Visiting Research Fellow
Key skills include engineering and environmental geology including site investigation; risk assessment and remediation of contaminated land; environmental impact assessment; physical containment barriers; the siting and design of landfills; soil slope stability and superficial structures. Since completing my research thesis on engineering effects of superficially disturbed strata in 1981 I have gained broad-based experience in the civil engineering and mining sectors encompassing geotechnical consultancy, civil engineering contracting, materials testing, site investigation, contractual claims, contract research and university teaching.
Projects have included the re-development of contaminated industrial sites (mines, quarries, car factories, chemicals, airfields, cement, metals, oil refinery, ports, etc.) including remedial strategies and actions, EIA in the UK, Iran and Greenland, landfill design, 9M litre oil spill in Triassic sandstone, environmental due-diligence, mine closure guidelines, tailings management facilities, soil and rock slope stability assessment including a gas storage facility on an active slip complex, nuclear power and waste disposal, alternative energy (Severn Barrage tidal, wave, wind), soil nailed slopes, earthworks, highways and sewers.
I was responsible for maintaining high technical standards at Hydrock (a geotechnical consulting firm) and for the production of the company’s Generic Assessment Criteria for contaminated land risk assessment. I was a member of the teams who produced the 1st Edition LQM/CIEH and the EIC/AGS/CL:AIRE GACs and a co-author of the latter report. I have worked with the EIC advising Defra on the revision of the statutory guidance for dealing with contaminated land under Part 2A of the EPA 1990, and the provision of supporting technical guidance.
I am the author of a number of scientific papers, book reviews and a CIRIA book on physical contaminant barriers for contaminated sites and am a former assistant editor of the Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology. I am a former Chairman of the Engineering Group of the Geological Society of London and former delegate of the Ground Forum and of the Periglacial and Glacial Engineering Geology Steering Group.
Teaching experience includes a number of UK universities and CPD courses, including a part-time lectureship at CardiffUniversity on the Applied Environmental Geology MSc Course and External Examiner (2011-16) for the University of Portsmouth for two MSc courses: Engineering Geology, and Environmental Geology and Contamination. I have completed successfully the US OSHA 40 hr hazardous waste site investigation health and safety training course. Since retiring from Hydrock in January 2016 I have maintained involvement with the University of Portsmouth through a Visiting Research Fellowship and has mainly been involved in teaching activities in the classroom and the field.
I was awarded the Glossop Medal in 2018 by the Engineering Geology Group of the Geological Society for my life-long contribution to the application of engineering geology to civil engineering.
I held the follwing designations during my professional career:
FGS - Fellow of The Geological Society (1978-present)
