Dr Laurie Ede
I began teaching at the University of Portsmouth in 1996, initially within the School of Art and Design. Subsequently, I designed the first Media Studies degree at Portsmouth (2001) and worked extensively on the development of Film Studies. I also introduced the study of journalism to this university.
Currently, I am in my second stint as Course Leader of Media Studies. I also lead the BA programme in Film Industries. I teach broadly in both areas. I am a film historian and a media philosopher. My teaching also expresses a particular interest in areas of applied writing.
My writing to date has been dominated by my interest in the applied art of film production design. By the same token, I teach skills of journalism and scripting as the means of applying words to particular demands and audiences. Much of my critical work is given to analysing the institutional and economic determinants of media and cultural production.
