Dr Mario Saraceni

Associate Head

Mario Saraceni

I have been at the University of Portsmouth since 2004. I previously worked in Bangkok, Thailand and in Nottingham, where I received my PhD in 2001. I have travelled extensively in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong), where I also have conducted research and presented papers at international conferences.

Research Interests

I am primarily interested in all issues related to the rules and the roles of English as a transnational and de-anglicized language, especially from a political and ideological perspective. I am fascinated by the many understandings and representations of the entity that we call 'English' especially in public, non-academic discourse.

I am also interested in the applicability of Systemic Functional Linguistics and of Multimodality for (critical) discourse analysis.
