Mr Phil Ashwell
I began my career in the Health Profession in 1999 as a HCSW at a private hospital. I became a student at the University of Portsmouth on the Operating Department Practice (ODP) course which I passed in 2002. Having gained a BSc (HONS) in Perioperative Care in 2006 I moved from the clinical area into education. Originally involved with the development of the Expert Centre in 2006 I moved into the ODP education team in 2010. Gaining a master’s in Education I now have units on the ODP course and teaches across the school in other areas of expertise. I have also spoken at several national ODP and international conferences focussing on clinical simulation. I am part of the Education and Standards committee for the College of Operating Department Practitioners (CODP). As part of that role I am an external examiner for another HE establishments. I have taken on the role as course leader for the CERT HE Paramedic Practice and sucessfully run it to date.
Following the success of the CERT HE the University have developed a non credit bearing level 3 course - Preparation for Paramedic Practice' (PPP) for the Practitioners who will use this to apply for the CERT HE. Following the success of both programmes a level 5 unit was designed to bridge the gap between the CERT HE and the BSc top up degree. This was named as 'Enhancing Paramedic Practice, (EPP). I am present the course lead for all these courses and just have the first batch of feedback there will be delelopment of more of these.
