Professor Richard Thelwell
Head of Department
Having joined the Department in September 2000, I became Head of Department in August 2009 and was awarded a Personal Chair in Applied Sport Psychology in June, 2017. I am a Registered Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council, a Chartered Psychologist of the British Psychological Society, and, an Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Further to this, I was awarded a BASES Fellowship in recognition of my contribution to sport and exercise science in the UK.
In addition to my Education and Research activities, I have, and continue to be, an active practitioner where my experiences include having worked with a range of professional sporting organisations, governing body sporting organisations, and business organisations.
Having spent several years examining the benefit of psychological skills training for sports performance, more recent work has focused within the area of coach psychology (stress, emotion, coping and performance), psychological skills and behaviour change, and practitioner development. Richard also has a vested research interest in professional practice factors in applied sport psychology. He serves as Associate Editor for Case Studies in Sport and Exercise Psychology, and on the Editorial Board for International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology, and International Journal of Sport Psychology.
