Summary

I am a Principal Lecturer and Associate Head of the Strategy, Enterprise and Innovation subject group. The Associate Head is a key management role, in which I am responsible for the planning and resourcing of the teaching in the subject group and the overall quality management of the teaching.

My main area of academic expertise is strategic management; I am completing a PhD on strategy discourse. I have previously advised an NHS trust and its GP practice managers on cultural change within their organisation.

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and I have shaped the strategic management, teaching and assessment in the subject group. I have contributed supporting teaching materials to a number of strategy textbooks.

Before joining the University I worked in the travel and IT sectors.

Biography

I first came to the University as a mature student to study BA (Hons) Business Studies and I began teaching on a part-time basis in 1999. I became full time in 2003, progressing to my current teaching and administrative roles. In 2017 I started my PhD in the area of the discourse of strategy.

Before that I worked in business travel and also in the IT sector, where I was a manufacturing systems programmer for a company in Hampshire.

Research Interests

I am interested in the area of 'strategy as practice': in particular, the discourse of strategy, which examines the way that organisational strategy is written, communicated and understood. I focus on the corporate strategy of higher education institutions.

In terms of real-world impact, my research aims to help management teams develop strategies that are more widely embraced and therefore more likely to be effective.

Teaching Responsibilities

I teach strategy on several modules covering at undergraduate and postgraduate level. My particular teaching interest is in the area of performance and role playing, which involves colleagues and students performing different roles in a scenario. This builds on my philosophy of giving the students a real-world learning experience, as well as creating a fun way of teaching and learning.

My most recent strategy teaching development has been for the MBA Strategic Leadership course. This involves teaching large groups of post-experience students from multiple industries.
