I joined the Royal Navy in 1974 and completed 26 years service in the medical branch as well as numerous roles at sea as the sole medical cover, also working in Ophthalmics, Urology, General Surgery and Medicine at the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar prior to undertaking Operating Department Practitioner training at the Wessex School qualifying in 1981. I was departed to the Falklands war in 1982 as part of the Surgical Support Team, 3rd Commando Brigade, operating in Ajax Bay until the surrender. On return, I assumed the Head of Naval Operating Theatre Training, implementing training and gaining accreditation of the City & Guilds Hospital Operating Department Assistant award. I Led RN training into the new NVQ in Operating Department Practice, qualifying the first students nationally - both RN and civilian in 1992. I studied at the University of Portsmouth for both Cert.Ed and BA(Hons), qualifying in 1993 and 1998.
I assumed lead for RN Operating Theatre Training, and deputy head of the Tri-Service ODP school upon amalgamation of the three services for training in 1996 and was awarded Senior Lecturer status in the Royal Defence Medical College in 1997. Upon leaving the RN in 2000 I assumed the role of Training and Professional Development Manager for Operating Theatres at Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth facilitating training for 400 staff and ODP students from the University of Portsmouth. During this time I was awarded Honorary Lecturer status within the University of Portsmouth. I was Invited as trust representative to the University of Southampton curriculum working group developing the foundation degree in healthcare.
From 2012 I assumed the Lead for General Surgery and Gynaecology at the Independent NHS Treatment Centre, Southampton, and qualified as a Surgical First Assistant (part 1&2) at Edgehill University. I started training as a Surgical Care Practitioner (not completed) prior to my appointment as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, May 2016. Academic interests include clinical and educational research in surgery and theatre practice.
