Summary

I work as the Senior Scientific officer based at the Environmental Technology Field Station (ETFS) in Petersfield. During the day I work on the Southern Water/University of Portsmouth Innovation Hub collaboration for water and wastewater engineering research.

I have worked as a specialist process engineer and manager within the construction and wastewater process industries. This has meant that I have worked with many of the big names in construction, including specialist consultancies related to wastewater engineering. I am professionally registered as a chartered engineer through the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), which was gained through the applied research and innovation activities. On a day to day basis, the research I perform research for Southern Water as part of the ‘Environmental Technology and Management’ research group, which is industrially led research on wastewater process technologies.

The fundamental research I performed on the influence of hydrodynamic conditions on the performance of biological reactors in 2015 gained international interest and was developed into a commercially available product. It also led to a publication in 2018 which linked the process performance of biological reactors with hydrodynamic efficiency.

I am completing a part-time PhD project with the University, which investigates how stresses in wastewater treatment processes can be analysed. As part of my research, I am also involved in the Interreg funded New Energy and Resources from Urban Sanitation (NEREUS).

Biography

I am a former University of Portsmouth, graduate with a BSc (Hons) from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2007. I then went onto complete an MSc in Water and Wastewater Engineering at Cranfield University before joining the University of Portsmouth to complete my PhD studies.

I started my career in industry as a project design engineer, then a process engineer and finally process engineering manager. During my time in industry, I was responsible for the design of bespoke engineered products for wastewater and industrial applications in the UK and internationally.

In 2017 I was appointed Senior Scientific Officer at the University of Portsmouth environmental research facility at Petersfield WwTW. The role is part of a collaboration with Southern Water which engages innovative technology companies in research and development projects related to wastewater engineering. My role supports the coordination and execution of research activities and involves applying my engineering knowledge to innovative wastewater process solutions. Initially, the Southern Water collaboration focussed on phosphorus removal technologies for small sites but has since expanded to cover a range of novel research projects.

Since joining the University of Portsmouth, I have written and submitted papers concerning the measurement of stresses in wastewater treatment processes.

Teaching Responsibilities

Presently I don't teach any modules, but would be happy to give tours of our facilities at the ETFS in Petersfield.

Research Interests

I am interested in research that makes a difference to our lives, through the implementation of improved sanitation for all. The focus of my research is to understand and evaluate stresses in wastewater process technologies.

My current research interests include:

  • Evaluation of stressors for wastewater treatment processes
  • The comprehensive evaluation of wastewater treatment technologies
  • Resource recovery from wastewaters

  • The simplification complex mechanistic problems
