Biomechanical evaluation of a novel cement formulation for vertebral augmentation
Project: Research
Description
Vertebroplasty is an effective surgery for relieving pain following vertebral body fractures. It
encompasses augmentation of the vertebra, through the injection of polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA),
to increase its strength and prevent further collapse. In this project a strontium-containing apatitic bone cement was optimized for injection in vertebral bone defects, providing sufficient strength to sustain primary fixation in mechanically competent bone-cement constructs.
