Educating 21st Century deterrence: Understanding the significance of attitudes in the shaping of policy.
The 2018 UK Government National Security Capacity Review highlights that ‘the world has become more uncertain and volatile since 2015’, as the UK faces a broad range of security threats beyond states. To deter these threats, the UK needs to develop a fusion approach combining ‘security, economic and influence capabilities to protect, promote and project national security’. This involves a collective response from policymakers, the military and academia. How can this best be achieved? Interviews will be conducted with deterrence experts to unpack how their experiences and backgrounds have shaped deterrence policy? Greater understanding of this will build towards efforts to educate and promote 21st century deterrence.
