Low Cost Maritime Automatic Identification System Detection with Software Defined Radio

Project: Other

Description

The aim of this project was to create a system capable of tracking maritime vessels using the Automatic Identification System (AIS) in conjunction with Software Defined Radio (SDR). The developed system consisted of three sub-systems: a rotor mounted directional antenna, an SDR and a computer application to perform the tracking and control of the antenna.

The resulting system was able to receive AIS signals and to adjust the antenna direction using the computerised control of the rotor so that the high-gain antenna could determine further more accurate information regarding the location of the vessel. A combination of open source software, including gnuradio and gnuais were utilised together with a specially design Visual Basic for Applications macro to automate the data logging in Microsoft Excel which also provided the control interface functionality.
