Virtual and Ambient Artificial Intelligence

Project: Research

Description

University project to investigate the useful use of virtual and ambient artificial intelligence. The project investigated progress in machine intelligence and especially energy efficiency based on ambient intelligence and using distributed user interfaces and then moved on to investigate engineering governance using intelligent monitoring.

Key findings

The project investigated progress in machine intelligence and found that:

- It is possible to usefully use an ambient intelligence sensor network (specifically using computers and radio transceivers).
- Parameters such as energy efficiency could be improved using ambient intelligence.
- Introducing AI into MEMS can lead us to brain-computer interfaces and super-human intelligence.
- Time delays when using tele operated mobile robots can sometimes be compensated for.
- Expert systems can successfully be used for automatic design-for-assembly.
- Ambient-intelligence can be used for rapid-prototyping.
- People in factories of the future will be forced to take on new and different roles.
- Some engineering governance can be provided using intelligent monitoring systems.
- Simple expert systems can be used to help and improve tele-operation.
- Expert system can generate and modify tasks (such as robot paths).
