'There's no complacency here, because we will need every one of those 318 Mondays there are between now and the opening ceremony.' All organisations have objectives, which may be expressed more or less formally. Sometimes, such objectives provide a very clear and very public statement of the whole purpose of the organisation, as well as a stark binary test of its effectiveness. The organisation established to make the London 2012 Olympics happen is one such case - as its website (with its real-time countdown graphic) explains, the games will run from Friday 27 July 2012, by which time everything has to be ready. And being ready in 2012 will be the result of successfully co-ordinating the efforts of dozens of other independent organisations - 'only slightly late' is just not an option.
