Comparison between hydrofluoric acid and single component primer as conditioner on resin cement adhesion to lithium silicate and lithium disilicate glass ceramics

The influence of Hydrofluoric acid followed by silane or Monobond Etch&Prime on micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) of RelyX Unicem 2 to VITA Suprinity and IPS e.max CAD was tested. Three groups per material were identified: Hydrofluoric acid, Hydrofluoric acid + Silane, Monobond Etch&Prime. In each group, 15 cylindrical build-ups of RelyX Unicem 2 were prepared on 5 bars processed with CEREC InLab MC-XL, and tested (µSBS). Data were analyzed using Two-Way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test. Failure modes were classified as adhesive, mixed, cohesive, and statistically analyzed with Fisher’s Exact Test. One additional bar per group was destined to SEM observation of the conditioned surfaces. The material per se did not significantly influence adhesion. Conditioning protocol per se was a significant factor: Monobond Etch&Prime yielded significantly higher µSBS than Hydrofluoric acid. No significant differences emerged between the comparison of the other groups. The material-conditioning protocol interaction was not statistically significant. Significant inter-group differences were found in failure modes distribution: mixed failures were significantly more frequent than adhesive failures for VITA Suprinity treated with Monobond Etch&Prime. Adhesive failures were more prevalent for the other groups. As an alternative to the conventional etching protocols, Monobond Etch&Prime can be conveniently used to promote adhesion between resin cement and lithium silica-based glass ceramics.
