Finishing of titanium ALM parts by laser ablation

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Additive layer manufacturing attracted a lot of attention lately due to the design freedom it can offer. Enabling complex shapes to be realized while maintaining material properties allows new applications to be developed. Together with a lot of advantages this technology can offer, there are some shortcomings as well. The main concern in many cases is the surface properties. Usually parts fabricated by additive layer manufacturing exhibit higher surface roughness that affects functionality and significantly limits the areas of utilization. In this paper solution to improve surface roughness is presented using an industrial grade nanosecond laser.
