Horpinem: Horpinem for Symphony Orchestra

Research output: Non-textual formComposition

Fanfare for Symphony Orchestra. Composed for BBC National Orchestra of Wales as part of the 'competitive' Composers of Wales project 2016-17. Premiered and recorded at BBC Hoddinot Hall, Cardiff on January 30, 2017.

Subsequently performed by UWE Bristol Symphony Orchestra at Colston Hall, Bristol on March 26, 2017.

The commission was for a fanfare for Symphony Orchestra. The piece uses Brahms Intermezzo in A Major Op.118 No.2 as its source material. Following spinal surgery the composer was again able to play the piano, this piece being the first to be performed following recovery. The orchestral fanfare reflects a morphine-induced, dream-like response to the commission brief for a fanfare and is based upon three key musical elements that interlock to conclude the fanfare.

A four-bar section of the Brahms Intermezzo provides the harmonic source material which is complemented by contrasting musical material 'borrowed' from a well-known chord utilised by Igor Stravinsky.

The opposing musical material resolves toward the culmination of the fanfare.
