Introducing human resource management

The main objectives of this chapter are to:
- discuss the different meaning of the term 'human resource management' (HRM);
- illustrate the diverse work undertaken by the human resources (HR) function;
- analyse the reasons for the growth of HRM, placing its arrival and development within a wider fluctuating economic and political context;
- focus on contemporary debates concerning HRM, highlighting the 'promise' of HRM as well as the difficulties faced in delivering on the main assurances made if organizations adopt the philosophies and practices associated with this mode of people management.
