'//_sleeper': ’lo-fi’ independent animation research

Research output: Non-textual formArtefact

//_sleeper originated as a commission project funded by the BFI and BBC in 2018. The resulting output was a 7-minute short film which aired across BBC Four, BBC iPlayer, BFI Southbank and BFI Player. The primary areas of research in this project centre around lo-fi animation aesthetics for independent production, and ambiguous, expressive narrative structures.

//_sleeper is an example of computer-generated animation being produced within a low budget, independent framework. The research and production of the film expands upon the principles laid out in David OReilly’s paper Basic Animation Aesthetics, in which OReilly claims “My central belief is that the key to aesthetics is coherence.” (OReilly, 2009) Essentially, the question of the project became - how can personal, expressive animation be achieved within such a small production scale, whilst retaining a unique visual identity?
