Time in actor training: the commodity of illusion

This paper aims to raise awareness of the effect of economic factors on how contemporary student actors experience time in actor training. It focuses on UK higher education courses in universities and conservatoires. The student actor’s experience of time is greatly influenced by the economic structures and goals of such institutions and by the changes in education and art industry of the last five years. This paper will explore the student’s experience through Gary Becker’s concept of ‘human capital’. It will contribute to contemporary debates about ‘the political turn in actor training’ and the material realities of the contemporary acting profession.
